The first step to a brighter music industry is exactly what you’re doing here – bands making their music freely available in high quality. I’ll be doing this with all of my own solo and band releases. The second step is for music fans to keep buying the music they want to support. In my experience, people who are genuinely passionate about music do this anyway.

Big labels won’t like the inevitable consequences – Mass marketing will no longer ensure the success of an artist. The real winners are the more creative and lesser known artists who, through downloads, file-sharing and music blogging, will get a lot more visibility and recognition than big record labels would ever pluck up the courage to give them, and who music fans will feel passionate about supporting by buying CDs and concert tickets. Success in the music industry will become all about being respected as an artist, rather than being about mass marketing and safe-bets for big labels.

So to the guy who said he felt like an idiot for buying the CD, don’t! You’re keeping the industry alive. I’m about to download this Eatliz album, and I can tell you right now that if I like it as much as I think I will, the first thing I’ll do is buy a hard copy. That’s just how we’ve all got to think if we want good music to be a part of our lives. A big shift is happening in the music industry right now, and we need to make sure we keep supporting the artists we respect in order to keep music as a viable career for them and for the next generation of musicians.
